Post-It Notes Are Pure Evil!

Post-it notes used to be some of my best friends. Let's face it, they come in lots of pretty colors, many shapes and sizes,  teacher's love office supplies, and they practically scream, "You don't have to make a commitment if you use me."  As previously posted, a really long time ago I might add, I don't do commitment and follow through very well.

Who knew that a small yellow note that started its existence as a hymnal page marker could have come so far and become sooooo evil.  It has become a trickster, a deceiver, a giver of false hope.  How can this be you ask.  Well, let me tell you.

Whenever I sit in a meeting or listen to a sermon or read a book, I will mark information that strikes me as interesting or noteworthy with a post-it note.  I have many books with post-it notes sticking out from pages all crushed and wrinkled.  They lull me into a false sense of action.

Sadly, I have become a "Post-It Note Christian."  (Thank you Tammy from Common Ground for the phrasiology.) I love God.  I want to serve him faithfully.  When I go to church, I go expecting God to meet me there.  And He does.  God speaks through His people in mighty ways.  I am inspired, uplifted, convicted, challenged, and called to action.  I furiously write down powerful words and phrases on my post-its so that I don't forget them; so that I can do something with them later.  Some of those post-it do make their way to my bathroom mirror, where they will stay until they get steamed and fall off.  By the way, making it to the mirror is a big deal because each day I am reminded of God's word as I wash, brush, and admire.  However, most don't make the mirror.  They stay in my bible or rainbow clutter up my notebook.

Lately, and for much of my life, God has been calling me to stop being so undisciplined, get out a pen or better yet a permanent marker, and just do it whatever it may be that God is calling me to do.  We are called to action not note taking.

Dear Lord,
Help me to not pencil you in, post-it note your word or put a pin in it to save for later.

Let's Put A Pin In It
Watch below for a brief scene from Bolt about putting a pin in it.  Cute!

James 1:22-24
22 Do what God's teaching says; when you only listen and do nothing, you are fooling yourselves. 23 Those who hear God's teaching and do nothing are like people who look at themselves in a mirror. 24 They see their faces and then go away and quickly forget what they looked like.

Auto Pilot, GPS, and the Road Less Traveled
Have you ever gotten in your car and started on your way to go somewhere and completely missed where you were suppossed to turn because it was different from your normal routine?   I have even said, "I must have been traveling on auto pilot." when this has happened.  There are times that we become so used to our routine, our comfort zone, that even when we try to change it up, we tend to still travel on auto pilot.
I was blown away last night and this morning, (I went to church 2 times this week), when the pastor said, "The path that you are on determines your destination."  Duh!!!  This is so simple yet so profound.  I, myself have been guilty of relying on good intentions.  I have made lists, joined webistes, visualized a positive outcome, and even prayed.  (Right now, I am mainly thinking about the weight and health issues in my life.)
The reality is no matter what you punch into the GPS if you don't turn right when it says turn right and just go on auto pilot you will not reach your desired destination.  However, the great thing about GPS is, when you don't turn when it tells you to, it recalibrates.
When I was younger and would go camping with my dad, he would always get up early each morning and take a walk.  I would sometimes go with him.  As we were walking through the woods we would usually take a path that was there from the many other people who had walked the same way.  That path or trail  made it easier to walk through the woods.

Once I got on one of these paths not knowing that is was a bazillion miles long, and I would be walking forever.  I did not check the sign at the beginning of the path to see where I would end up.  That kind of lends itself to the "How did I get here?" theory.  We have to pay attention in life.  Just because I didn't read the sign it didn't change the destination of the path.
Just think, if I had had a cell phone with GPS.  (They didn't have cell phones when I was a child, so it would have had to have been a compass.) It could have recalibrated my course and I could have gotten off of that path.  The trip through the woods may have been difficult beacuse there wasn't a well worn path that had been trampled down by all of those who had gone before me.  And, I may have had to struggle a bit, but I would have been able to reach my desired destination.
God and His word are like a GPS.  He knows the final destination and recalibrates for us when we get off track.  And, sometimes the journey is difficult.  But, all we have to do is turn and follow the path that he has laid out for us and we will end up where we should.  I am just thankful that it is never too late to recalibrate.

Toby Mac: Get Back Up
We lose our way,

We get back up again

Never too late to get back up again,

One day, you gonna shine again,

You may be knocked down but not out forever,

Lose our way, we get back up again,

So get up, get up

Strength Will Rise

I went to a political red tape kind of meeting the other night. We went into it with a, "God can do anything" kind of feeling. We were riding high on community spirit. We all had high hopes as to what the outcome of the meeting would be.
When we lay our petitions before the Lord and ask something of Him, we always seem to expect a yes. When we don't get a yes, we sometimes become angry or restless. We wonder what went wrong, or why did God not answer my prayer.
It is easy to forget that there are three answers to a request: yes, no, and wait. Let us not loose sight of the fact that God is in control. Maybe His answer right now is wait. Unfortunately, we only see what is right in front of us. We don't have a God view of the situation. Maybe there is something that God is trying to teach us.
God has not forsaken us or this project. Things will turn out just the way that God wants them to. We just need to continue to lay our requests before Him and pray that his will be done in this situation and in His timing.
This song has been runing through my head for the last few days, and I think that it sums up what I have been feeling.
Everlasting God

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.
Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our strong deliverer.
You are the everlasting God,
The everlasting God.
You do not faint,
You won't grow weary.
You're the defender of the weak,
You comfort those in need,
You lift us up on wings like eagles.

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.

Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our strong deliverer.
You are the everlasting God,
The everlasting God.
You do not faint,
You won't grow weary.
You're the defender of the weak,
You comfort those in need,
You lift us up on wings like eagles.

You are the everlasting God,
The everlasting God,
The everlasting God,
The everlasting...
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.

The Lord is the everlasting God,
The creator of all the Earth,
He never grows weak or weary,
No one can measure the depths of His understanding,
He gives power to the weak, and strength to the powerless,
Even youth will become weak and tired,
And young men will fall in exhaustion,
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength,
They will soar high on wings like eagles,
They will run and not grow weary,
They will walk and not faint,

New Year's Resolutions

What is it with New Year's Resolutions?  Why do I hate them so?  My husband and I went out to dinner on New Year's Eve and he asked me what my resolutions are  for this year. I said something lame trying not to really give it too much thought, and then I quickly asked him his.

Yesterday I wanted to post a blog about my New Year's Resolutions or maybe my Goals for the New Year.  They would all be about how I was going to do this and this and that better this year, including keeping up with this blog.  It would be symbolic, 1-1-11, posting on the first day of the new year.  I just couldn't seem to do it.  I've already missed an opportunity to make a change to my ways and it is January 2nd.  I might as well forget it, right?  Oh well another resolution gone by the wayside.

Then, I was watching the news this morning and they we already polling their viewing audience about who has broken their New Year's Resolutions and why.  For crying out loud, it's only January 2nd.   Don't they have anything better to discuss on the news than people's shortcomings in the new year.  One of the viewers said that they had made a resolution to stop swearing so much, but then they stubbed their toe and . . . Oh well.  This got me to thinking.  I tend to put off making New Year's Resolutions and I began to wonder why.  Is it because they are dumb, or nobody really takes them seriously, or is it because I'm afraid to make a commitment to stick to anything in my life; even if it is just a silly tradition that doesn't really mean much? Does every resolution come with a get out of jail free card?

Of course I had to consult the expert.  I went to Webster.com (Who uses a real dictionary anymore?) to see what a resolution really is.  Wow, there sure are a lot of definitions for resolution most of which have nothing to do with trying to eat less, exercise more, and solve global warming (if there is such a thing).  Resolution: (n) something that is resolved, firmness of resolve.  Great, let's look up resolve.  Resolve:  (v) to reach a firm decision about, marked by firm determination, and fixity of purpose.  Now we are talking.  I also consulted the synonyms (words that mean the same. "s" for same "s" for synonym.  Clever right?) and antonyms (words that are opposite.  No clever way to remember this one.)  Synonyms:  do-or-die, firm, intent, purposeful, set, single-minded, granite, and my personal favorite stick-to-itiveness.  Antonyms:  faltering, hesitant, indecisive, undetermined, vacillating, wavering.

Of course being the over achiever that I can sometimes be, (I said sometimes) I had to look up the word firm as well.  Firm:  (adj) not weak or uncertain, not easily moved or disturbed, well-founded, steadfast.  Okay, I also looked up well-founded.  I think I have an addiction to Webster.com.  Well-founded:  (adj) based on excellent reasoning, information, judgement or grounds.

So now I know more about resolutions than the average Joe.  Why don't I ever want to make one?  I think because deep down I have always known what a resolution is.  Did you see those strong words: firm, steadfast, set, single-minded?  One year I said to Eric we should make goals for the new year.  You don't "break" a goal.  I think that's it.  If you don't reach a goal, you can just modify it.  It is all very touchy feely.  There is no failure, just modification.  I knew it then and feel like if I "break" a resolution, I have failed.  For me this is the worst four letter "f" word in the English language.

I did a lot of keyword searches for steadfast, firm and the like in the bible, but I will elaborate on those another day.  I have been side-tracked while authoring this post.  I asked a serious question of why and got an answer right here while typing at the keyboard that I would like to further explore.  Sometimes we (I) become so focused upon all of the ways that we can fail at something, we never do anything.  I think that has been me many times in my life.  I spend so much time researching, safeguarding, question asking, contingency planning, and fearing the worst, that I never just do it.  The opportunity passes or the urge is suppressed.  I am 43 years old and I am never going to be a rock star. (Why am I crying at my computer? Weird huh?)

I found this passage (God lovingly led me to it.) while looking through scripture today:

Romans 4:18-21
18 When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn't do but on what God said he would do. And so he was made father of a multitude of peoples. God himself said to him, "You're going to have a big family, Abraham!" 19 Abraham didn't focus on his own impotence and say, "It's hopeless. This hundred-year-old body could never father a child." Nor did he survey Sarah's decades of infertility and give up. 20 He didn't tiptoe around God's promise asking cautiously skeptical questions. He plunged into the promise and came up strong, ready for God, 21 sure that God would make good on what he had said. (The Message)

Here is my RESOLUTION: I will stop being fearful of failure and start doing something.

Lord help me to plunge into your promise so that I can come up strong, ready for God

My Goals
We were told at the beginning of this journey to actually write down our goals.  So here are mine.

The areas I would like to improve the most about my body and fitness levels are:
I have always love aerobics and cardio, but when it came to strength training, I suck. I have zero upper body strength and always have. Push-ups are my nemesis. Also, I want to be able to breathe when I am doing cardio. I want to run and play with my kids and not have to sit or put them off.
Identify the biggest problems or barriers in your path that may prevent you from reaching your fitness goals.
I am a procrastinator through and through. I tend to fill up my time with the urgent and not necessarily the important. I also have a hard time with putting myself first. With one car everybody else's activities take priority over mine: kids sports, meetings, and such. I am good at coming up with valid reasons why I can't work out.
In what ways are you responsible for these situations?
I try to not put myself in situations that I am good at. I fill up my time with extra curricualr activites that I am succesful at and make me feel like I have accomplished something. When I do any kind of working out, I feel like a big dufus. Emphasis on big. I realize now that this is pride rearing its ugly head. I pray that the Lord helps me with this pride issue.
Imagine that you have the ability to reach any fitness goals you could ever set yourself. What do you look like? What size clothes do you wear?
I wear a 10-12, but size is a realative thing. I would like to be a good healthy weight. I don't care much about what I look like, I just want to be healthy and not embarrass my kids. I want to feel comfortable in my clothes.
What are your most common excuses for not eating right or exercising?
Too tired, too busy, not enough time, too expensive to eat healthy, too far away, who will watch Lizzie, etc. It's not hard. Excuses are readily available.
What are some things that you can do to offset your justifications or reasons?
To steal a slogan from a popular shoe brand, "Just Do It!" Find a way. If it is truly important it will become a priority.

My sister has been truly my biggest cheerleader. She has offered to come and work out with me. She keeps calling me to see how each workout has gone. She makes sure that I am staying healthy. She has taken my daughter and she keeps telling me that I can do it.

Whatever the outcome of this Biggest Loser Challenge is, it doesn't matter. I am already a winner. I have made some great friends. I have felt the "gentle nudging" of my God dealing with my pride issues. I have learned that being humble means hauling my big behind up a hill in a screwed-up crab crawl while someone takes my picture or asking someone else for help when I find something challenging.

I want to be an example of a Godly woman caring for His temple while I am here on this earth for my children and my grand-children.

Here are the lyrics to the song below.  It is on my workout ipod.  Powerful stuff!

"Fly"
When last place is where I've been
It's hard to find the strength to start again
Sometimes it seems like I can never win
I'm held back by the weight of the crowd
Can't move to find my way out
You give me faith to get my feet of the ground
'Cause it's not easy

Trying to fly against the wind
When I keep on falling back to where I've been
Start over again

I'm overwhelmed when there's too much
Hiding the view to all that you've done
I step back to see how far we've come
And you're always with me (when I'm)

Trying to fly agains the wind
But I keep on falling back to where I've been
Trying to fly against the wind
Start over again

When last place is where I've been
You give me what I need to start again

Trying to fly against the wind
But I keep on falling back to where I've been
Trying to fly against the wind

And you keep on coming back for me again... over and over again

Having Fun with Food
One of the best things for me about trying to eat healthy is creating new recipes.  One of the reasons that I weight ###lbs is that I love food.  I love the whole experience of food: scanning the Internet for recipe ideas, planning my twist on the recipe, making it, smelling it, seeing how beautiful it looks, and lastly savoring the tasting experience.  I even have a little food dance that I do when I eat something really yummy.  I didn't know that I did this until my husband pointed it out to me. (Evidently this is one of my endearing qualities as far as Eric is concerned.)  This is part of the reason that losing weight is hard for me.  I love food.

All of those thin people out there think of their food as fuel.  They eat something to nourish them whether they find it tastes fabulous or not.  I like to make food that is rich and yummy with things like butter and bacon fat and all things artery clogging.  I like to make food that is so amazing that I want to swim in it. Unfortunately, my life is hectic and so I also really like eating out.  Again at places that cook those amazing yummy foods with butter and bacon fat and that come with five carbohydrates on a plate.  Now that I want to run out and eat something a shouldn't, let me tell you the reason for this post.  I am experimenting and creating some healthy flavorful dishes, because if it doesn't taste good I'm and not wasting the calories eating them.

White Bean and Cherry Tomato Salad
1 can navy beans, drained and rinsed
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 small Vidalia onion or 1/4 large
1/2 tsp dried rosemary
1/2 lemon
2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tbs balsamic vinegar
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1.  Chop onion and juice the 1/2 lemon onto the onions. (This is supposed to take the bitter edge off of the onion.) Add the rosemary, olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and salt and pepper to create a dressing.
2.  Add the beans and the cherry tomatoes and mix well.
3.  Chill in the refrigerator for a few hours to let the flavors come together before eating. (I left mine overnight in the fridge,  and it was excellent the next day.)

I created this recipe for a Fourth of July cook-out.  It was a hit with the healthy eating crowd as well as others  I brought healthy dishes to pass so I could make sure that there was something there for me to be able to eat.  I was very prepared and proud of myself.  I brought a gallon pitcher so I could make sugar-free raspberry lemonade.  I made the White Bean and Cherry Tomato Salad and a Chicken Cabbage Salad, the recipe will be posted soon.

I am having so much fun coming up with new foods and flavor combinations.  When I made the decision to eat healthier I took my family along with me.  My son Joshua has come along kicking and screaming.  It's not quite that bad, but for the first time that I can remember, he ate salad the other day for dinner.  He also informed me that my new recipe endeavour: a chicken breast, tomato, onion, and mushroom concoction made in the slow cooker (not a great recipe name) was awesome.  I try!

Enjoy the video below.  I couldn't get it to go away so I guess it is meant to be here.

Still Going Strong

I have to say that the workouts are brutal, but more than my body is being shaped.    It's amazing to me how something as simple as saying I want to lose some weight and getting involved in Metro's Biggest Loser has had such an impact on my entire life.

I have never been much for being a "team player".  It's not that I don't get along with people.  I just prefer to work alone.  I like to be in charge, the captain of the ship, the master of my own destiny so to speak and so on and on.  I like to quietly do my thing in the background.  I don't like attention drawn to me.  And, I especially don't feel comfortable asking for help. Then viola, I meet my deadline or pull off my event whatever it may be.  I don't want criticism and I don't want praise.  I kinda thought of myself as humble, but guess what. . . It's really pride.  Who Knew?  Not me.

My team members, "Go Blue!", have been phenomenal.  I can't thank them enough for their care and support.  They have been encouraging and fabulous.  When I'm down on the ground after some sort of eastern mysticism pretzel twist and having a hard time hauling my fat you know what up off of the ground, it's not unusual to have a hand extended to help me up.  My first reaction is, "No I got this," or "I'm fine."  PRIDE You know what?  I've been taking the hand.  It's taken awhile for me to understand that I am hiding behind a firewall.  The Lord has been breaking down this wall one sprint at a time.

Below is a video of a song that I have on my ipod.  Its reality for my life has hit me hard these past couple of weeks.  I can't do it: my workouts, my life, my anything, by myself.  I need Jesus and I need other people as well.

I'm celebrating small victories today.

Joshua's travel team had a tournament in Brighton this weekend. Normally I would have just hopped into the car and gone off to the tournament and gotten fast food.  This weekend I took the time to slice cucumbers, pack sandwiches for the kids, put carrots and nuts and grape tomatoes into containers, sliced lemons and filled a jug with ice water to drink, and put in some strawberries for something sweet.  No fast food for the Kuhns this weekend.  Then there was a cook-out afterwards.  I brought my own whole wheat buns and cut up lettuce, tomatoes, and onions to top my one burger.  I did not have any chips, cookies, or fattening salads.  It wasn't that difficult.

I have not had any Coke for a week.  This is no small victory.  I drank so much Coke that they are going to miss me.  A day in the life of Nan included at least three 32 ounce Coca-Colas a day.  Yikes!!!  That's $3.00 a day on sugar pop with empty calories.  That's $21.00 a week and ultimately $1092.00 a year spent on supporting my Coke habit, not to mention the pounds that have accumulated on my body through those calories.

I've been preparing and cooking my own foods this last week.  My family is also eating healthier this week, much to Joshua's dismay.  He is not as on board as the rest of us.  Lizzie is excited at the prospect of eating healthy.  Eric has been very supportive of my efforts as well.  This Biggest Loser Competition has been just the kick in the butt that I have needed to jump start my life again.

Thank You Jesus!

Day 4

I did it!!!  Personal victory for me.  I conquered the Woodhaven hill.  I have to say that this week has been one of the toughest things that I have experienced in my whole life.  I know that it sounds a bit dramatic, but it's true.

This experience is going so much deeper for me than just the exercise.  I am trying to break patterns and yes bondages that I have held for a very long time.  I apparently don't ever do things that I am not good at.  I used to joke that I never participate in an arena where I can't win.

I very quickly realized that this endeavour was not going to be easy for me.  I had to work harder at this than I have worked at something in a long time.  There are just things that I can't do, not yet anyway.  It has made me angry.  I mean really angry.  How did I get to this point?  Where did I go off the path?  When did I become a passive observer in my own life?  And sadly, how is this affecting the rest of my family?  God has surely been dealing with me this week and I don't like it.  In fact I HATE IT!

Hebrews 6:10-12

10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

I have unfortunately become lazy.  Procrastination has become my constant companion.  Now the road back is uphill and it lives in Woodhaven.

Pressed Down Shaken Together
Pressed own shaken together running out all over,
stomp on the grapes,
tread out the new wine,
Give thanks to the Lord forever.

If your bless him, then he'll bless you,
and fill you up with a wine that's new.
So
Stomp on the grapes tread out the new wine
Give thanks to the Lord forever.

As I was getting my butt kicked real good today, this little diddy came to my mind.  When I was a teen this was a song that our youth leader sang with us.  At one point he had to lead worship out at camp and made my friend and me come up and lead the motions.  Way outside my comfort zone I might add. This song kept running through my mind as I was making my attempt at running today.   I am outside my comport zone, not just flirting with the edge but way out there like Pluto. When I came home I looked up the reference in the bible.  I really like how it applies to all of us going through this training together.

It made me think.  I am certainly feeling pressed down and shaken.

Luke 6:38-40
Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure -pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return." 39 And He also spoke a parable to them: "A blind man cannot guide a blind man, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit ? 40 "A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.

I really like the message that God is teaching here.  It is about generosity and getting a good measure, more than what your paid for and more than your deserve.  Essentially if you buy a bag of potato chips (Not that I would do that. LOL), you pay for a bunch of air.  This passages has to do with not only getting what you "pay for" so to speak, but they have pressed it down, crushed it together to be able to get as much in as possible and then some.

These trainers are pressing us down.  They are giving to us, we are giving to each other, and we are all doing it for the glory of Him who has made us in His image.  We are becoming fully trained so that we may become like the teacher.  I don't want to be like the blind falling into a pit.

Day 1

I know it is going to sound stupid, but I just did one of the scariest things I have ever done.  I have joined with my  brothers and sisters in Christ and embarked upon a journey called, "Metro's Biggest Loser".  For any of you who have ever watched the show you kind of have an idea of how it is going to go.  I must admit that I myself have never watched an entire season, but I know the premise.

Metro South Church, my church, has taken this formula, added a God  perspective, blended it all together, and came up with "Metro's Biggest Loser".  Don't let the church thing fool you.  These people are butt kicking, whip you into shape, take no excuses, trainers.

We gathered, all shapes, all sizes, all ages, and all fitness abilities in front of Anytime Fitness in Flat Rock.  Chatting and laughing in anticipation of what was about to happen.  Fear of the unknown mixed with excited nervousness, and a healthy dose of determination.  A multitude of reasons brought us to this one place for this one purpose, a life changing encounter with God at the center of it all.

As I experienced each of the activities I made a mental check on the list.  Looming down at the bottom of my list was running the mile at Trenton High School.  Dread and fear washed over me like waves of the ocean in hurricane season.  It has always been so easy to quit in the past.  I could find an acceptable reason why I couldn't, but now no reason is acceptable.  I had run smack dab into my fears.  "I know I am going to be last."  (Pride)  "So what, I won't quit." (Determination)  "What if I can't do it?" (Fear)  "I can do it!" (Perseverance)  "Will people laugh at me?" (Ego)  We cheered for each other. (Camaraderie)

I am so excited to be a part of something that is such a "God thing" that it is going to blow everyone away.  I don't think we can even begin to imagine the lives that are going to be changed.  I know that no matter where I end up in this journey, I know that right here, right now, I am ALL IN!

They are stars!!!
Joshua and Elizabeth are both in acting. Elizabeth had her first performance in a production called "Go Fish" in January. Joshua did a showcase of his acting workshop in February. They both did such nice jobs and wanted to do it again. This time they are in the same production called "E I E I Oops!" They will be having their production on Sunday, April 20th.

Wrestling has taken over our lives!!!

Well Joshua is about done with wrestling. He has been rolling around on the mat so to speak for the last four months. He has stayed in good condition all through the winter.

I have to say however that I have had a hard time as a mom watching my son summarily defeated match after match. I has gotten so bad that he is getting "hurt" and forfeiting matches instead of sticking it out and just losing. It is the first sport that he has come across that he is not really good at.

When I first got married to a football nut I used to say, "My child will never play football. It is dumb and the players just run around knocking into each other." Now after experiencing the anguish of seeing my son suffer through other sports, football is my favorite. Who would think it.

Trunk or Treat 2007

A Day in the Life...

Today was one of those days that I wonder where the justice in life is. I have a small boy in my class that brought a knife to school today. It was found by mistake. It was just a small (less than 3 inches thank goodness) pocket knife. He came to me to tell me that it was his. He began to cry and said that his mom and dad did not know that he had it and that he did not mean to bring it to school. It fell out of his pocket on accident. I wish that was the end of the story. He then went on to tell me that this tiny little knife was in his possession because when he comes up to the playground after school there are big kids there that jump him and hurt him. One of his friends gave him the knife for protection. I told him not to come up to the playground alone. I told him to not come up to the playground at all. I asked him what did he think was going to happen when he "little kid" pulled a knife on them "big mean kids". After I turned the knife into the office, I went and told him that I appreciated his honesty and that he needed to go home and tell his parents because they were going to be getting a phone call from the office. He broke down and was crying with heart wrenching sobs. As he slid down the wall sobbing, I began to cry.

What has happened to this world. I have this little boy in my class, not an angel but not a problem. He is one of my kindergarten safeties and does a fabulous job with the children. He takes his job seriously and I really like him. This nice boy is now facing at least five days of suspension pending a hearing that could determine that he might be expelled. All because he felt powerless. As always nothing will probably happen to the bullies, even if they are found. Bullies rarely get caught. Bullies rarely get punished. My poor child will now have this incident on his permanent record. Yes, it does exist and it is computerized now.

I was crying because I felt bad for him.

I was crying because I felt powerless to help him.

I was crying because no child should feel like they need a knife for protection.

I was crying because I had to be the one to turn him in.

Skipping on the Playground
At what age do we lose our childish exuberance?
I was in the drive through lane at the Taco Bell the other night, (Which by the way needs to be another topic for another time. The evils of driving thru late at night.) when I saw youthful exuberance. One little high school girl was working behind the counter when her other little high school friends came in after practice. You would have thought that they were reunited after years of seeing each other. The hugging, the giggling, and the jumping up and down seemed quite over the top. Then I began to wonder. When was the last time that I became that enthusiastic about anything, especially the meeting of friends after my day was nearly complete?
There was something a bit sad as I sat there late at night feeding my face with way too much fast food, sugary Mt. Dew pop, and my Carmel Apple Empanada. When did commercial fast food become the substitute for the bigger joys in life. The small pleasure now go unnoticed and have been replace with things that leave you feeling sick, bloated, and all to often dissatisfied?
A few days have past and the gnawing feeling of somehow I am completely missing the mark in my life get pushed to the back burner. Its not gone but I begin tending to the urgent in my life. Then it happens again. I am out on the playground watching the kids playing at school. We as adults call this recess "duty". We have reduced this childhood pleasure to adult "duty". All of the teachers are sitting on the bench hoping that the time will speed up and we can just get back to business. That when it hit. There was a group of three girls from the 1st or 2nd grade. They were holding hands and skipping in a line, and singing "Loo! Loo! Skip to my Loo." They were covering a lot of playground territory. The first grade teacher grabbed my hand and the other first grade teacher's hand and we began to skip around the playground as well. (Side note-I teach 5th grade.) Yes my feet hurt and I was winded, but it felt good.
Mark 10:15
I tell you the truth, you must accept the kingdom of God as if you were a little child, or you will never enter it."

Heartbreak in the Kuhn Household

Well it has begun. . .football season. Joshua and Eric had their first game on Saturday. They lost 32-0. Everybody came to see and suport Joshua. Auntie, Uncle Chris, Grace, Zachary, Uncle Troy, Abbie, Aiden, Uncel Chad, Aunt Shawn, Brian and Savannah. All of the kids had fun running around and dodging the bees. Joshua got named as one of the captians. He was really excited. He was on the field almost the whole game, so apparently he is a stud.

Later that day Elizabeth went shopping with Tracie and Maddie. Poor Elizabeth was with me in a clothing store and she walked by a clothing display rack and it fell on her. I heard the blood curdling scream, looked at her and it looked like she had blood pouring out of her eye. The employees rushed us into a back room at the store. They gave us a gauze and ice. We drove off to the emergency room. There they treated her for her injury. She got to have x-rays of her head to make sure that no bones were broken. She got to see the x-ray of her head. She thought it was cool.

All turned out ok. It was quite the eventful day.

Vacation Bible School

It is that time of year again. Vacation Bible School. This year's theme is Avalance Ranch. The Dearborn churchputs on the best VBS program. The kids have a lot of fun. This year each of the children have received a cool t-shirt and a colored bandana. The decorations are great and everything runs smoothly. Best of all, the kids are excited about learning about Jesus. I know that this may be controversial to some, but when the packaging is exciting the kids become excited. Yesterday's verse was: The Lord is the only true God, Jeremiah 10:10.

Summer Bowling Fun!

The kids get a color sheet each week. At the bowling banquet they will each receive a book full of all of the color sheets that they completed while they bowled. They also get pins for strikes, spares, 30 point games, 40 point games, and a patch for 50 point games. Elizabeth has earned each of these.

Maddie plays the crane game. she is obsessed with it. Unfrtuanately this is not one of the games that is easy to win so each week she goes away upset.

The most important part for Elizabeth is looking good!
